Favor natural stone wherever the application allows it. Honed marble, limestone, and travertine bring a depth and variation that porcelain can only imitate. Large-format porcelain has its place — it is practical in wet areas and easier to maintain — but stone is what gives a bathroom the quiet weight of a room that was designed, not decorated.

Think about pattern the way you would think about art. A herringbone floor, a book-matched slab on the shower wall, or a hand-set mosaic border can turn tile into the defining feature of the room rather than a backdrop. Minimal grout lines and large-format pieces read as more considered than a busy pattern of small tiles, and they let the material itself do the talking.

Book-matching slabs so the veining mirrors across a seam, or continuing the same stone from the floor up the shower wall, removes the visual interruptions that make a bathroom feel assembled rather than composed. This is a detail most people never consciously notice, but it is the difference between a bathroom that feels finished and one that feels expensive.

Choose your finish for how light behaves in the room. A honed or matte finish reads softer and more contemporary, absorbing light rather than throwing it back. A polished finish adds brightness and can make a smaller bathroom feel more expansive. Neither is inherently better — the right choice depends on the room’s natural light and the mood you want it to hold.
